Job Description
Transnet, South Africa’s leading freight and logistics company, is offering an exciting opportunity for aspiring professionals through the Train Assistant Trainee Internship Programme 2025. This entry-level role supports Transnet’s train operations by assisting the Train Driver in the safe, efficient handling of various train types (airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, heavy haul, and passenger) to ensure on-time, damage-free delivery of cargo, meeting customer expectations.
Responsibilities
- Shift Duties: Sign on at the designated workplace and receive shift assignments.
- Locomotive Preparation: Ready locomotives for operation, ensuring equipment readiness.
- Communication Setup: Prepare and test communication equipment before departure.
- Pre-Trip Preparation: Perform pre-trip inspections for locomotives and the train, adhering to roadworthiness standards and safety regulations.
- Shunting and Safety Procedures: Assist in shunting operations and safe transit according to set procedures.
- Enroute Support: Support the Train Driver enroute, ensuring safe passage from origin to destination, with no delays or damages to locomotives, wagons, tracks, or infrastructure.
- Incident Reporting: Provide timely and accurate feedback on incidents or deviations during the journey.
- Administrative Duties: Complete the train journal and submit it to the Section Manager at shift-end.
Qualifications
- Grade 12 certification with Pure Mathematics or Physical Science.
Experience
- No prior experience required, although experience in logistics or transportation is advantageous.
Skills
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work as part of a team.
- Good physical condition with the ability to carry heavy objects.
- Aptitude for following complex safety instructions and operational protocols.
