Job Description
The Train Assistant will work alongside the Train Driver to ensure the safe and efficient operation of various types of trains and locomotives, including airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, heavy haul, and passenger trains. This role is critical in ensuring that freight and cargo reach their destination on time, in good condition, and in compliance with safety standards. The Train Assistant will be responsible for assisting with the preparation, handling, and movement of trains to meet customer and organizational requirements.
Responsibilities
- Sign on Duty: Report to the designated workplace and receive shift duties to be performed.
- Locomotive Preparation: Prepare locomotives and ensure all equipment is ready for the journey.
- Pre-Trip Inspections: Perform pre-trip checks to ensure the locomotive and train meet safety and roadworthiness standards.
- Shunting Activities: Carry out shunting activities in sidings and during the journey to maintain safe operations.
- Assist Train Driver: Aid the Train Driver during the journey to ensure safe and timely arrival at the destination without damage to equipment or infrastructure.
- Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols and instructions to ensure operational safety and efficiency.
- Incident Reporting: Provide the Train Driver with timely feedback regarding any incidents or deviations encountered during the trip.
- Administrative Duties: Assist with administrative tasks such as maintaining and submitting the Train Journal for accurate shift records.
Qualifications
- Minimum Education:
- Grade 12 with Mathematics or Physical Science as core subjects.
- Other Requirements:
- Successful completion of a medical evaluation and safety behavioral risk assessment.
- Ability to meet the physical, hearing, vision, and mental fitness requirements (assessed through medical tests).
- Candidates must be at least 1.6 meters tall.
- Age requirement: Candidates must be over 21 years of age to perform Train Driver or train control duties.
Experience
- No prior work experience required, although familiarity with train operations or similar fields is an advantage.
- Training will be provided, including theoretical and practical certification as a Train Assistant.
- Willingness to undergo ongoing medical surveillance and periodic safety risk assessments.
