Job Overview:

South African National Parks (SANParks) is excited to offer internship opportunities for students in 2024. This program provides hands-on experience in managing and preserving South Africa’s national parks and wildlife reserves. Interns will work alongside professionals in conservation, tourism, and administration, gaining valuable insights into the operations and management of protected natural areas.

Position Purpose:

The South African National Parks Internship Program aims to provide students with practical experience and knowledge in the fields of conservation, wildlife management, and park administration. Interns will contribute to SANParks’ mission of protecting South Africa’s natural heritage while developing skills and competencies relevant to their field of study.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist with wildlife monitoring and conservation activities, including data collection and analysis.
  • Support park management with administrative tasks, including report preparation and record keeping.
  • Contribute to environmental education and community outreach programs.
  • Help with visitor services and tourism operations, including guest interactions and information dissemination.
  • Participate in fieldwork and research projects related to park ecosystems and biodiversity.
  • Engage in team meetings and provide input on ongoing projects and conservation strategies.
Education:
  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Environmental Science, Wildlife Management, Conservation Biology, Tourism Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum academic standing of a 2.8 GPA or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Previous internship or volunteer experience in conservation or wildlife management is advantageous but not required.
  • Exposure to environmental or tourism-related activities through academic projects or extracurricular involvement is beneficial.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and observational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and basic data analysis tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Enthusiasm for conservation and environmental management with a proactive approach to learning.
