Job Overview: The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) offers an exciting internship programme for recent graduates and young professionals interested in gaining hands-on experience in South Africa’s foreign policy and diplomatic affairs. Position Purpose: The purpose of the DIRCO Internship Programme is to provide valuable experience and practical training for individuals looking to build a career in the field of diplomacy, international relations, or public service. Interns will contribute to the department’s various functions, offering support and gaining exposure to South Africa’s foreign policy, international collaborations, and global partnerships.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with administrative support in the coordination of diplomatic activities.
- Conduct research and analysis on international relations, global issues, and regional developments.
- Provide assistance in preparing briefing materials, reports, and presentations for high-level meetings and conferences.
- Support the department’s communication and public diplomacy efforts by contributing to social media and public relations activities.
- Participate in organizing events, workshops, and international seminars.
- Assist with the management of international partnerships and government-to-government relations.
- Perform any other tasks assigned by the department related to the intern’s area of interest or study.
Education:
- A completed Bachelor’s degree or currently pursuing a Master’s degree in International Relations, Political Science, Law, Public Administration, or a related field.
- A strong academic background in global affairs, international diplomacy, or a relevant discipline is preferred.
Experience:
- No prior work experience is required. However, candidates with some exposure to international relations, governmental or non-governmental organisations, or public policy will have an added advantage.
- Prior involvement in academic projects or internships related to international relations, diplomacy, or foreign affairs will be beneficial.
Skills:
- Strong analytical, research, and report-writing skills.
- Good understanding of international politics, diplomacy, and South Africa’s foreign policy.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), with the ability to draft clear and concise reports.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work in a team, with attention to detail and a proactive approach.
- A positive attitude and willingness to learn in a fast-paced environment.
- Fluency in English is required; knowledge of other official South African languages or foreign languages will be an asset.
