Job Overview
The Department of Water and Sanitation is offering internships for 2024 as part of a youth employment initiative. This program provides unemployed graduates with the opportunity to gain practical experience in the public sector. Interns will be placed in various divisions within the department, contributing to the management of water resources and sanitation services in South Africa.
Position Purpose
The internship aims to develop essential skills and experience in water and sanitation management, government operations, and public service practices. Interns will receive hands-on training in policy development, resource management, and environmental sustainability, enhancing their employability in the public and private sectors.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in the planning, coordination, and implementation of water and sanitation projects.
- Conduct research and analysis on water management and environmental sustainability.
- Provide administrative support to various departmental divisions.
- Participate in meetings, workshops, and policy development initiatives.
- Help prepare reports, presentations, and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
- Engage in fieldwork and site inspections to support project initiatives.
- Collaborate with team members to meet departmental goals and objectives.
Education Requirements
- Must have a completed National Diploma or Degree in relevant fields such as Environmental Science, Water Management, Civil Engineering, Public Administration, or related disciplines.
Experience Requirements
- No prior work experience is required. This program is tailored for unemployed graduates seeking workplace experience.
- Any prior internship or volunteer experience in related fields will be advantageous.
Skills Requirements
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
- Problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Basic knowledge of water management, environmental conservation, and sanitation policies (preferred but not mandatory).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Eagerness to learn and adapt to the public sector work environment.
Beneficiaries of the Internship Programme
- The internship targets unemployed South African youth between the ages of 18 and 35.
- Preference is given to individuals from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, in line with government employment equity policies.
