Job Overview:
The Council for Geoscience Internship (CGS), South Africa’s premier geoscience research organization, is inviting applications for its 2024/2025 Internship Program. This program aims to offer recent graduates and students practical experience in various geoscience disciplines, providing a strong foundation for future career opportunities in the field.
Position Purpose:
The purpose of the CGS Internship Program is to develop skilled geoscientists by providing hands-on experience and exposure to real-world projects in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and environmental science. Interns will work alongside experienced professionals, contributing to cutting-edge research and national projects.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in fieldwork and data collection for geological and geophysical surveys
- Conduct laboratory analyses of geological samples
- Support research projects by analyzing and interpreting geoscientific data
- Prepare technical reports and presentations on research findings
- Participate in environmental impact assessments and site investigations
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on national and regional geoscience projects
- Contribute to the maintenance and updating of geoscience databases
- Perform administrative tasks related to research and project management
Education Requirements:
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a recognized university with a degree in Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Environmental Science, or a related field
- Strong academic record with a focus on geoscience subjects
Experience Requirements:
- Previous internship or work experience in geoscience research or related fields is advantageous but not mandatory
- Demonstrated interest in geoscience through coursework, projects, or extracurricular activities
Skills Requirements:
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills
- Proficiency in geoscience software and tools (e.g., GIS, MATLAB, RockWorks)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
- Willingness to participate in fieldwork and travel to remote locations
